Histology of Tongue

The tongue is essentially a pharyngeal derivatives as it develops from the floor of pharynx and moves forward into the oral cavity. Its subdivided embroyologically, anatomically and histologically into body and root.the body contitiutes anterior 2/3 part of the tongue .its covered with ectodermal epithelium that’s bears the series of taste buds.T he protruding porion of the tongue is concerned with chewing and diction (speaking ).The root constitutes posteriors 1/3 part of the tongue Sincs this part of the tongue is situated behind the bucco-pharyngeal membrane within the pharynx , it is covered with endodermal epithelium . The primary functiuon of the root is swallowing .The mucous membrane below the mamlians tongue form a medians fold called frenulum which joins the tongue to the floor of the mouth. The upper surface of the body of tongue bears four kind s of projections called “lingual papillae” .
